OPINION — Life is fraught with difficult questions. Why is a nickel bigger than a dime? Why does Hawaii have an interstate highway? Why are hot dogs sold in packages of ten while hot dog buns are sold in packages of eight? What does ‘fraught’ mean, anyway? Is it even a word?
OPINION — In February 1991, I was assigned to the last position B-52G in a six-plane, nighttime sortie against one of Saddam Hussein’s weapons depots in Karbala, Iraq.
Jim Hughes was the first businessman I met in San Angelo when I arrived in late 2004. I met Hughes at his office in downtown off Twohig Avenue. He traded agricultural commodities and was very plugged into what was going on in San Angelo.
Producing sustainable local news is really difficult. Radio station KDCD tried but couldn’t keep its website up when breaking news. In the end, when unable to compete with us, as the story goes, the result is they’ll hate us.
At this point, I think we have a need and an opportunity to heal divisions within the department and unite everyone under a singular purpose. Travis has the vision and desire to do just that.
OPINION — I have listened to all of the noise about needing change in the police department. Frankly, I didn’t know that San Angelo has a problem with the police as I believed the current Chief Frank Carter has done an outstanding job in reforming the department during his tenure. But I understand that people want change, because some believe change means something better. But guess what? Change is not always better.
OPINION — I have been around as a journalist in San Angelo since Chief Tim Vasquez allegedly pinched the buttocks of a confidential informant woman at the Oasis Night Club on Beauregard. I count four elections, including the one this month. I have seen very nasty competitions and some years with no election at all. Chief Frank Carter was effectively appointed to a second term in an uncontested race in the 2000s because no one would run against him.
PAID POLITICAL ANNOUNCEMENT — I have served in the San Angelo Police Department for 33.5 years. I love it. With your help, I’ll spend the last phase of my career serving as police chief, and I’m excited to help the next generation of officers prepare to provide an ever-safer future for San Angelo.
OPINION — Generally, I'm not a fan on endorsement letters. Not because I don't think they're effective or meaningful, it's because most of the people who write them don't truly know the person they're writing the endorsement for.
