Joe M. Self, Jr. to Run for San Angelo City Council District 2

SAN ANGELO, TX — Joe M. Self, Jr., a longtime resident within the Lake View community and current member of the city’s Planning Commission, has officially filed to run for the San Angelo City Council in the May 3 election.

He is one of three candidates seeking to represent Single Member District 2.

Self, who returned to San Angelo in 2007 to work in the family business, Automatic Fire Protection, said his decision to run is rooted in a legacy of public service and a desire to apply “common sense” leadership to city government.

“My dad was a former city councilman for SMD 2, and one of his slogans was ‘strong representation through common sense,’” Self said during our recent interview.

Born and raised in San Angelo, Self is a third-generation graduate of Lake View High School and Angelo State University, where he earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees.

“A city must be moving forward to grow, or it’s going backward,” Self said.

He said that we need to attract new businesses and protect the ones we already have. But the city should also ensure our infrastructure, like water and sewer, is in place to support that growth.

He also pointed to regional development in cities like Abilene, Lubbock, and Midland-Odessa as models to watch.

If elected, Self said his first 90 days would focus on learning the intricacies of city operations beyond the Planning Commission.

Also on the ballot for SMD 2 are Dudra Butler and John Bariou. Early voting begins April 22.
