ECTOR COUNTY, TX — Health officials have confirmed the first case of measles in Ector County.
The case involves an infant too young to be vaccinated, the Ector County Health Department announced.
Health officials are working to identify individuals who may have been exposed and are monitoring for additional cases. Due to the nature of measles, unvaccinated individuals are at the highest risk of infection, the department stated.
Measles symptoms typically appear seven to 21 days after exposure and include high fever, cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes. A rash usually develops three to five days after symptoms begin, starting on the face and spreading downward.
The MMR vaccine is highly effective, providing protection for 97% of people who receive the recommended two doses, information stated. The health department encourages vaccination for those over the age of one to reduce the spread of the virus.
Anyone experiencing measles symptoms should isolate immediately and contact a healthcare provider before seeking in-person medical attention. Severe cases, which can include high fever over 103°F, difficulty breathing, seizures, or dehydration, require emergency care.
