Popular Former Community Cardiologist Says Shannon Fired Him

SAN ANGELO, TX — “San Angelo has had a superb medical community,” said Dr. Michael Blanc, a much respected cardiologist with the former Community Medical Associates who thousands from around here knew as the host of the healthy heart cooking show on local television with the late Chef Henry Wiens and then with Chef Marc Daniels. He was also the doctor who initiated the “Walk with a Doc” education program where he invited San Angelo residents to walk for better health at the Sunset Mall.

Blanc was the head of cardiology and medical director for the former San Angelo Community Medical Center (SACMC) whose assets were acquired by Shannon Health in a transaction last month. The transaction came after the State of Texas provided anti-trust immunity through a Certificate of Public Advantage, or COPA. The COPA law, signed by Governor Greg Abbott in September of 2019, was intended to allow rural hospitals to be more sustainable in a health care marketplace unfriendly to hospitals established far away from the large metropolitan areas of Texas by protecting and regulating hospitals located in a select seven counties as monopolies.

Rumors spread quickly about Blanc’s departure early this week, as he was a high profile medical star who had saved many lives in the Concho Valley. Blanc told us via text Tuesday night that he was fired. Blanc said Shannon Health told him after less than two weeks of employment that he, “[D]idn’t fit their long-term plans and terminated [my] employment without cause of action.”

“Dr. Blanc regrets not being able work with his dedicated and compassionate staff in providing the state of the art cardiovascular care to which his patients have become accustomed,” he wrote formally.

Blanc was a favorite speaker on the local mashed potato circuit, frequenting Rotary and Lions Club meetings where among his helpful advice for maintaining a healthy heart was to eat a fistful of nuts a day. He should know, because for the past 15 years at the hospital, he was busy saving countless lives suffering heart attacks.

Through Blanc’s leadership, the SACMC was the first hospital in west Texas to achieve door to balloon time for treating a heart attack in less than the national average of 90 minutes. That was 13 years ago, Blanc said. “It has remained at less than 60 minutes for over 10 years,” he added.

“This has saved many lives and prevented many patients from developing congestive heart failure,” he said.

The cardiology department at SACMC broke more new ground over the past 15 years under Dr. Blanc’s direction. Dr. Blanc was the first cardiologist in San Angelo to do cardiac catheterization procedures via the radial artery approach that reduces complications and enhances patient comfort. An electrophysiology program was also developed at SACMC and it was the first program in the Concho Valley to perform curative ablation therapy for patients with atrial fibrillation.

Blanc’s efforts were recognized. SACMC became the first hospital in west Texas to be accredited as a chest pain center and congestive heart failure center of excellence by the American College of Cardiology.

Shannon Health would not comment on the reason for Blanc’s departure.

“While we cannot comment on personnel matters, our two cardiology departments are working closely together to serve patients. This has no impact to the variety of services available to the community we serve or the scope of those services,” said Shannon spokeswoman Lyndy Stone in a statement late Tuesday afternoon.

“With the acquisition of Community Medical Center complete, Shannon is now home to more than 300 providers, including 5 leading cardiologists and two cardiothoracic surgeons. These trusted providers are passionate about serving the residents of our community and are available to care for patients at Shannon Medical Center and now, Shannon South. As we bring our strength and expertise together, we remain focused on providing high-quality, compassionate healthcare services to our patients and the region we serve,” she said.

Before the acquisition, when Shannon was awaiting approval of its COPA to complete the buyout of community, we asked about a “mass exodus of docs” that medical doctors and health providers had warned us should Shannon take control of all hospitals. The concern was that Shannon could deny hospital privileges to former SACMC or independent doctors requiring them to move away from San Angelo to continue to practice medicine.

Shannon told us then that that was not their intention.

“Through the proposed acquisition of San Angelo Community Medical Center, we have the opportunity to protect healthcare and local healthcare decision-making in our community. It is our desire to expand—not reduce—service offerings to ensure West Texans have access to highest quality healthcare for generations to come.

“The physicians on the medical staff of SACMC will become members of the medical staff of Shannon immediately upon completion of the acquisition. We will continue to provide services at both campuses as San Angelo Community Medical Center and Community Medical Associates will be a part of the new Shannon South Campus. There are nearly 300,000 people across 25 counties in our region who count on all of us for their healthcare. We look forward to welcoming San Angelo Community Medical Center, its employees, physicians and patients into the Shannon family as we work together to meet the needs of this region,” Shannon told us in August prior to when the acquisition was green-lighted by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and the Texas Health and Human Services Commission.

With no immediate access to use of any hospital facility in San Angelo, Dr. Blanc did not indicate he will be sticking around here. He has a home in the Dallas area.

Dr. Blanc said he was asked to vacate his office in 24 hours and to have no further clinical contact with his patients or staff. He said he was as astonished and shocked as much as his patients were by this action.

Shannon said patients who have questions regarding any transition of care are invited to call the Shannon Welcome Line at (325) 481-2100 for assistance. The service is available Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Now that Shannon is the only choice for medical care in this area they have started dismantling the other hospitals cardiovascular Dept. The cardiologist at Shannon killed my father last year after preforming a simple surgery to repaire a possible aneurysm. 5 days later my father was dead. He was in good shape and should have had many more years with us. I would never go to Shannon for medical care but now I have no choice but to

drive to Abilene. Thanks Greg abbot for screwing with my medical care!

I truly hope Shannon Medical Center will find a way to work with Dr. Blanc so they excellent care he has provided to my 86 year old mother and so many other people can continue.  I accompany her to each appointment.  Dr. Blanc is one of the few physicians that remembers his patients and spend more than 3-5 minutes in the room with them.   He always has a smile on his face and is willing to meet any need my mother has.  Love you Dr. Blanc

This is a damn shame! Dr. Blanc was my doctor and my late mom’s. He is one of the most professional and personable people I have had the pleasure of knowing! So I guess we will take what Shannon gives us. Shannon is not off to a good start! Thanks Dr. Blanc for being a stand up guy! San Angelo is losing a good doctor and man!

Congratulations SA!  They know what is best for you and you will like it or else!!!

I received a pacemaker 10 years ago that Dr. Blanc put in....... BUT...... it really belonged to someone else.  My chart got mixed up with a much older person.  All he could say was that all the mistakes were fixed, but I still had a pacemaker that I didn't need, and had to PAY the bill still.  And if you think I don't have the paperwork to prove it, I do!  I'm glad he is never going to get a chance to get to me again.  I left his office 10 years ago after HIS mistake.
