BIG SPRING, TX — COVID-19 cases remain steady across the country and federal prisons are no exception.
According to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, the federal corrections institute in Big Spring has the highest number of positive coronavirus cases in comparison to all the other federal facilities.
Currently, the top five federal institutions with the greatest number of cases are located in Texas, California, Florida, and Kansas. Together they amass a total of 559 cases or 31.5 percent of the total active cases.

According to the BOP or Bureau of Prisons, a total of 1772 inmates and 645 staff members are currently considered positive with the virus. Additionally a total of 118 inmates and 2 staff members have died due to COVID-19.
In order to mitigate the spread the BOP opted to allow certain inmates to be selected for home confinement.
"Since the release of the Attorney General's original memo to the Bureau of Prisons on March 26, 2020 instructing us to prioritize home confinement as an appropriate response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the BOP has placed 7,650 inmates on home confinement."
