Actor Val Kilmer of Top Gun, Tombstone Fame Dies at 65

LOS ANGELES, CA — Val Kilmer, a versatile actor who played several iconic roles during his career, died Tuesday from pneumonia. He was 65.

Kilmer’s breakout role was in 1986 in his third film, Top Gun, where he played hotshot pilot Iceman.

In 1991, Kilmer starred as singer Jim Morrison in The Doors, which gained him acclaim for his acting range and commitment to the role.

He’s perhaps most beloved for his legendary portrayal of Doc Holliday in the film Tombstone in 1993.

Kilmer’s stardom continued through the 1990s as he also played Batman in Batman Forever in 1995. That same year, he played one of his most memorable roles as a bank-robbing demolition expert in Heat.

He was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2015 and underwent a tracheal procedure that damaged his vocal cords and made it difficult for him to speak.

However, in 2022, Kilmer once again played Iceman in Top Gun: Maverick, marking his final film performance.
