SAN ANGELO, TX-- The San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts will be hosting a free lecture on January 17 at 5:30 p.m. in the SAMFA Meeting Room.
The lecture will be presented by Dr. William E. Reaves. Reaves has previously served as a member of the Board of Directors of the San Antonio Art League Museum and was a founder, Board Chairman and Executive Director of the Center for Advancement and Study of Early Texas Art. From 2006 to 2017, he and his wife Linda were owners and principals of William Reaves/Sarah Foltz Fine Art in Houston, one of the state’s foremost purveyors of early, mid-century and contemporary Texas art.
Reaves will give an illustrated lecture titled, "Painting the Lone Star Landscape: Influences of the San Antonio Competitive Exhibitions, 1927-1929." In three spectacular art events held 1927-1929 in San Antonio, the Texas art community took center stage in American art circles for the first time. Dr. Reaves will relate the intriguing back story of these historic art events and portray prize-winning images that stand today as our state's consummate depictions of Texas in art.
Dr. Reaves’ lecture is hosted by the SAMFA Collector’s Society, a group within the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts’ membership, that each year presents a series of discussions and talks on a broad range of issues. This year’s lecture series is sponsored by a grant from the FMH Foundation in Midland, which has allowed SAMFA to bring a variety of important speakers such as Dr. Reaves to our community.
All are encouraged to attend this free event, and there will also be refreshments provided. For more information please call the museum at (325)653-3333.
