Spirits were high at the San Angelo Stadium Friday night, when the Central Bobcats took on the Midland Bulldogs at Central’s homecoming game.
The stadium was so packed on the Bobcat side that San Angelo Central crowds overflowed into the opposition stands. But even Midland showed up in numbers. Small ones.
Traffic on Knickerbocker was backed up a light in either direction, and the SAPD put out an alert to avoid the street due to high traffic. The game was sold out before it even began.
“This is the most packed I’ve seen it in awhile and I’ve been here doing this for five years, “ said Bell Guardians sponsor Brandee Baird.
Central’s Homecoming King, Nolan Sosa, was crowned at the school’s morning pep rally. His, queen, however, was scheduled to be announced in a more traditional fashion.
When half-time rolled around, all eyes were on the field as the MHS and CHS marching bands took turns entertaining the crowd. And as the clock counted down, attention spans extended their focus to the field where Homecoming Queen nominees were being taxied in golf carts.
One by one their names were called, and after all had been introduced, Homecoming Queen Bethany Balderas was crowned by last year’s winner, Megan Brown.
“Amazing,” Balderas said as to how she feels about being queen. “It’s such an honor, I’m so excited.”
Excitement ran from the field to the top tiers of the stadium’s stands, and there seemed to be a general consensus of what Central is all about.
“Central is…”
“Spirited!” about 10 or so students replied. But Central’s also “intimate (close-knit), the best, number one, and cool.”
As far as homecoming goes, Central students say homecoming is all about “orange and blue, spirit, tradition, making new friends, and pride.” One student took the response outside of the box and sated “Homecoming sounds like bells.”
Regardless of the sound or state associated with the name, Friday night was a good night to be a Bobcat. Central annihilated Midland, 63-21.
