The Art Museum plans to add nine studios for artists to showcase their artwork.
The buildings will be called the "Muses", inspired by the nine muses of Greek Mythology.
As per myth, Calliope, Clio, Urania, Thalia, Erato, Euterpe, Melpomene, Polyhymnia, and Terpischore are the daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne – memory incarnate—and are the nine goddesses of the arts.
They were generally thought to be orators of history and the inspiration for many works of art and literature as referenced by many popular poets like Shakespeare, Virgil, Chaucer, Milton, and Homer.
Drawing on their history as a source of inspiration, it’s only fitting that a group of nine studios would be named after the goddesses.
According SAMFA plans presented at the Design and Historic Review Commission meeting Thursday, the buildings will not have plumbing or air-conditioning and each artist will only set up shop for two to three days.
The parking lot, however will be a bit more accomodating, featuring covered parking with solar panels on the roof.
The Design and Historic Review Commission gave the A-OK on the buildings at the meeting, however the project is still awaiting approval from other governing committees.
