SAN ANGELO, TX – The Shannon AirMed1 helicopter made a special landing on the Angelo State University (ASU) campus today as part of the university's inaugural Summer Nursing Discovery Camp 9.0.
The event took place at the ASU Campus Green, across from the Massie Halls residence halls.
The residential camp, running from June 9-14, is designed for local and area students entering the 9th grade this fall. The program aims to spark interest in nursing among these young students by offering hands-on experiences and interactions with professionals in the field.
The AirMed team demonstrated the aircraft's capabilities, performed a simulated patient assessment, and involved students in loading a patient into the helicopter. This was followed by a Q&A session where students engaged with the AirMed team.
"I hope they left with an understanding of how awesome nursing is and the difference they can make," said Krysten Dyches, Chief Flight Nurse for Shannon AirMed. "There are so many avenues in nursing where you can make a significant impact."
Camp activities include learning from ASU nursing faculty and students, interacting with registered nurses and healthcare professionals, exploring nursing and patient-care skills, using human patient simulators, and participating in virtual anatomy lab dissections. Additionally, students will complete CPR and First Aid training.
Beyond the academic and professional activities, campers will also enjoy rock wall climbing, swimming, game and movie nights, recreational activities, and social time. The program also includes preparation sessions for a successful 9th-grade year. Instructors and supervisors will include ASU nursing faculty, staff, and students, with campers staying in the award-winning Plaza Verde residence hall. Most camp sessions are held in the Health and Human Services Building.
