Angelo State Trumpet Ensemble Presents 'American Music'

 

SAN ANGELO, TX — The Angelo State University Trumpet Ensemble will present its annual spring concert on Tuesday, April 9, at 7 p.m. in the Carr Education-Fine Arts (EFA) Building at 2602 Dena Drive.

Titled "American Music for Trumpets," the concert will take place in the Carr EFA Building's Eldon Black Recital Hall and is free and open to the public. The Trumpet Ensemble will be accompanied by guest artist Eric Baker on trumpet and Hunter Mabery, ASU staff accompanist, on piano.

The musical program for the concert will feature:

  • "When the Trumpets Sound" by Gwyneth Walker
  • "The Storm's Path" by Brian Balmages
  • "Amazing Grace" by John Newton, featuring Eric Baker on trumpet
  • "Durrenhorn Passage" by Kevin McKee, conducted by Gabriel Munoz
  • "Arabesque" by Joseph Turrin, featuring Dr. John Irish and Baker on trumpet and Hunter Mabery on piano
  • "Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child" arranged by D. Marlatt, featuring Hunter Winans on flugelhorn
  • "Ice Town" by Mike D'Ambrosio, conducted by Manuel Garcia
  • "Struttin' with Some Barbecue" by Lil Hardin Armstrong, featuring Baker on trumpet

The Trumpet Ensemble is directed by Irish and includes nine ASU student music majors:

  • Jesse Crawford of Baird
  • Jacob Flint of San Angelo
  • Manuel Garcia of Mineral Wells
  • Caden Kaufman of Shallowater
  • Gabriel Munoz of San Angelo
  • Sean Patrick of Coleman
  • Jonathan Rodriguez of Big Lake
  • Justin Vasquez of Lamesa
  • Hunter Winans of Lubbock

The guest artist, Eric Baker, is the director of community engagement in music and visual arts at the University of Texas Permian Basin and co-principal trumpet with the West Texas Symphony. He has also performed with the Big Spring Symphony, San Angelo Symphony, Legend Brass Quintet, West Texas Trumpet Workshop and Salt River Brass Band. He holds a master's degree in trumpet performance from Arizona State University.
