SAN ANGELO, TX — Angelo State University is hosting Dr. Michael Munger, a distinguished professor of political science at Duke University, for a special guest presentation on sustainable capitalism. The event is scheduled for Thursday, February 15, at 5:30 p.m. in Room 100 of the Mathematics-Computer Science (MCS) Building located at 2200 Dena Drive.
Sponsored by the Texas Tech University Free Market Institute at Angelo State University, Dr. Munger's appearance will also feature a book signing from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., immediately preceding his presentation. Both the book signing and presentation are free and open to the public.
The focus of Dr. Munger's presentation revolves around his book, "Is Capitalism Sustainable?" In his book, he explores the benefits and necessity of capitalism in organizing large-scale human cooperation. While extolling the virtues of capitalism, Dr. Munger will also address inherent problems within the system. His discussion will encompass an examination of Karl Marx's theories and the shortcomings of socialism, insights from the Public Choice branch of political economy, and an evaluation of markets and democracy.
As the director of the Philosophy, Politics, and Economics Certificate Program at Duke University, Dr. Munger brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to his research, which primarily centers on market functionality, regulation, and government institutions. His academic journey includes teaching positions at Dartmouth College, the University of Texas, and the University of North Carolina. Furthermore, Dr. Munger served as a staff economist at the Federal Trade Commission during the Reagan Administration.
Dr. Munger's significant contributions extend beyond academia. He is a past president of the Public Choice Society, co-editor of The Independent Review, and a former North American editor of the journal Public Choice. Among his notable publications are "The Sharing Economy: Its Pitfalls and Promises" (2021), "Tomorrow 3.0: Transaction Costs and the Sharing Economy" (2018), and "Choosing in Groups: Analytical Politics Revisited" (2015).
