February is Black History Month

SAN ANGELO – As February kicks off, the nation celebrates Black History Month, a time dedicated to recognizing the achievements, contributions, and rich history of African Americans. This year, the spotlight is on Fort Concho in San Angelo, Texas, as the community commemorates the legacy of Buffalo Soldiers, a significant chapter in American history.

Fort Concho, originally established in 1867 as a frontier military post, played a pivotal role in the expansion and settlement of the West. During this time, African American soldiers, known as Buffalo Soldiers, served with distinction at Fort Concho and elsewhere. These brave men made significant contributions to the nation's history, despite facing the challenges of racism and discrimination.

The Buffalo Soldiers, comprised of African American troops from the 9th and 10th Cavalry Regiments and the 24th and 25th Infantry Regiments, earned their nickname from Native American tribes they encountered during the Indian Wars of the late 19th century. These soldiers became legendary for their bravery, discipline, and commitment to duty.

One of the highlights of Black History Month at Fort Concho is the Buffalo Soldier Memorial, a tribute to the African American soldiers who served at the fort. The memorial stands as a powerful symbol of resilience and valor, honoring those who faced adversity with courage and determination.

Throughout the month, Fort Concho will host a series of events and activities to educate the community about the Buffalo Soldiers and their impact on American history. Visitors can explore historical exhibits, attend lectures, and participate in guided tours that highlight the experiences of these remarkable soldiers.

Buffalo Soldier Heritage Day is a day to honor and celebrate the legacy of Buffalo Soldiers who served in the U.S. Army after the Civil War.
This year’s event will take place on Sunday, February 25th from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm at the Buffalo Soldier Memorial Site opposite Fort Concho and Officers’ Quarters 1 and the Barracks 1 Visitor Center.

The celebration is free and open to everyone. There will be a program on the Buffalo Soldiers, book signings by two authors, and light refreshments.
Visitors can also explore the wonderful new Buffalo Soldier exhibit at Barracks 1. This is a great opportunity to learn about the history and achievements of the Buffalo Soldiers and to pay tribute to their contributions to our country.

The Fort Concho National Historic Landmark is working closely with community partners, schools, and local organizations to make Black History Month a memorable and educational experience for all. The goal is to foster a greater understanding of the Buffalo Soldiers' legacy and inspire future generations to appreciate the diversity that has shaped the fabric of American society.

As February unfolds, San Angelo joins communities nationwide in honoring the rich tapestry of Black history, with Fort Concho serving as a poignant reminder of the Buffalo Soldiers' enduring impact on the American frontier. The celebration at Fort Concho exemplifies the spirit of unity and resilience, echoing the sentiments of Black History Month that extend far beyond the confines of a calendar month, fostering a legacy of understanding and appreciation for generations to come.
