Governor's 'Texas School Choice Week' Recognizes Options as Vital for Kids’ Education

Austin – Texas Governor Greg Abbott has officially designated January 21 to January 27 as School Choice Week in the state. This recognition underscores the significance of flexible and personalized education options for both students and teaching professionals throughout Texas.

The proclamation by Governor Abbott comes on the heels of a year marked by unprecedented nationwide expansions in school choice. The declaration emphasizes the importance of ensuring the readiness of the next generation of Texans to face challenges. Governor Abbott asserts that this readiness commences by empowering parents to choose the educational pathway that optimally prepares their child for success.

Aligned with National School Choice Week, "Texas School Choice Week" is scheduled to coincide with the weeklong national celebration of K-12 education that takes place during the last week of January.

Throughout this designated week, parents, schools, and various organizers have arranged 2,317 events and activities across Texas. Notable among these are school fairs in Houston, San Antonio, and Austin. The overarching goal of these events is to initiate conversations about the educational opportunities available or desired by parents for their children.

Nationally, more than 27,000 events have been independently organized for the week, contributing to the heightened awareness of diverse school choices.

Shelby Doyle, Vice President of Public Awareness at the National School Choice Awareness Foundation, expressed appreciation for the significant engagement of Texas schools, homeschool groups, and families in School Choice Week. Doyle stated, "We're grateful that Governor Abbott's proclamation will raise awareness about this important opportunity and inspire even more families to start the process of exploring school choice in the Lone Star State."
