San Angelo ISD Approves Renovations for Sarah Bernhardt Theater

SAN ANGELO, TX - At San Angelo ISD’s most recent school board meeting, the board approved a $94,500.00 project to revitalize the Sarah Bernhardt Theater.

According to the agenda, in a recent evaluation of the Central High School campus, officials determined that the Sarah Bernhardt Theater required extensive work to meet district standards.

“As discussions began about possible work, the administration decided that it would be in our best interest to bring a theater expert on board to assist in all phases of this project,” information from the agenda stated. “This expert will assist in four areas, reviewing of the facility, recommendations for improvements, assisting in the development of bid documents, and assisting in project management and oversight."

To ensure a qualified partner for this undertaking, a request for qualifications was prepared.

Bids were received and two companies submitted documents. Proposals were reviewed and it was determined that WJHW of Carrolton for Fine Arts Consultant Services offered the best value to the district.

This investment is deemed crucial to maintaining the theater's functionality and meeting the needs of the thousands of students who utilize the venue annually.

The Sarah Bernhardt Theater hosts a variety of events, including band concerts, theater plays, speech and debate performances, presentations, and graduations.

Board trustee Gerard Gallegos spoke about the presence of outdated equipment in the theater.

"People may not realize how old that building actually is,” he said.

Board trustee Ami Mizell-Flint highlighted the potential impact on students, saying "If we are looking for a way to impact kids, I think putting money into our theater would be doing that."

The approval passed 6-0.

The way the city is going SAISD should focus more on real life values and training than how to put on drag shows and gender neutral programs. The way the trend is going now, teach them how to exist in the real world. A liberal arts degree is not worth the paper is is printed on.Teach them to read , write, math things that are usable in the real world along with blue collar trades. If they had Construction trades classes the students could not only do a large part of the work but gain a lot of experience.
