How the College Hills Construction Will Impact Bowie Elementary

SAN ANGELO, TX – The 2023-2024 school year is just weeks away, but if your child goes to Bowie Elementary, you may be concerned about the major road work being done on College Hills Blvd.

As previously reported in July 2023, construction on College Hills Blvd. moved from the area between Millbrook and Vista Del Arroyo to the intersection at Sunset (See original article).

Due to this, traffic detours are located on Forest Trail, directly in front of Bowie Elementary, and from that it can create issues with school pickup and drop-off. However, parents do not need to fear as San Angelo ISD spokeswoman Molly Turk claims the school district already has a plan in place.

"Due to the construction within the College Hills neighborhood, San Angelo ISD and Bowie Elementary needed to create a more efficient pick up and drop off to avoid road closures and construction around the elementary school," said Turk in a statement. "In collaboration with the City of San Angelo and the San Angelo Police Department, the one-way restriction on Forest Trail will not be in effect during pick-up/drop-off for the duration of the construction."

Instead of the typical one-way road during school hours, the school district has decided to take advantage of the two-way system.

Kindergarten and 1st-grade students' parents will enter Forest Trail going north from Sunset Dr. Parents will exit the pick-up line by turning right towards Sunset and not turning back towards the school. Parents of 2nd through 5th graders will drive south on Forest Trail from Millbrook. They will continue to the front of the school through the circle drive and turn back north on Forest Trail to exit. Students who walk home and cross College Hills will be asked to use Chatterton.

Pickup and Dropoff may be chaotic for a short time, so drivers not involved with the school should avoid the area if possible. The construction in the area is scheduled to take months.
