SAN ANGELO – San Angolans gathered on MLK Blvd. Saturday morning for the annual parade to celebrate the Juneteenth which commemorates word of the Emancipation Proclamation reaching Texas. It has since become a National Holiday.
The annual parade includes floats from area church congregations and participants from the San Angelo Fire Department, Police Department and other City Representatives including City Manager Daniel Valenzuela, Mayor Brenda Gunter, Parks Director Carl White and others.
One of the parade favorites is tossing candy to the children watching along the boulevard.

Juneteenth is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. Deriving its name from combining June and nineteenth, it is celebrated on the anniversary of the order, issued by Major General Gordon Granger on June 19, 1865, proclaiming freedom for slaves in Texas.

Bit of a non sequitur, but I would just like to use this space to communicate to the world the message that the famous cult leader "R. Kelly," known for his sexual assault of men, women and children, is a bad person.
Nonetheless, there are some individuals who also know that this individual has actually produced music within a certain niche genre and who have given money to R. Kelly's endeavors because of this music.
I would hope that people of integrity, who practice what they preach and thus inspire their fellow citizens to support their causes, would refrain from playing this music during any festivities in much the same way an individual who believes that slavery is a moral wrong would refrain from wearing shoes made by sweatshop labor, such as Nike's shoes.
In the final analysis, we all know that "the millwheels of heaven grind exceedingly fine," and that when we store up injustices because they contribute to our comforts, we are bound to get our just desserts.
We can't just go apologizing for someone who does bad stuff because they were an artist (or helped advance medical science, founded a car company and really liked nature,) and also expect our future to be fine.
We share this world with others, and the world is watching...
