Connally ISD Cancels Classes After Two Teachers Die of Covid-19

CONNALLY, TX –– Connally ISD announced Monday the district would be closed until after Labor Day in an effort to mitigate the spread of Covid-19 after two teachers died.

The district confirmed two middle school social studies teachers have died from COVID-19 this year. David “Andy” McCormick passed away on August 24th and Natalia Chansler passed away on August 29th.

“Any of our staff who’s been identified as close contacts, we ask them to be tested every other day,” said Assistant Superintendent Jill Bottelberghe.

Students will participate in remote learning according to TEA guidelines during this week.

In addition to canceling in-person classes, Bottelberghe confirmed all after-school practices and activities will remain closed until students return to campus.

Earlier reports indicated Connally High School will still play against La Vega High School, even if the school is closed.

During the week-long closure, all classrooms will undergo deep cleaning and sanitation.

"This closure is an effort to help reduce the spread of COVID-19 and is in line with recommendations from the McLennan County Health Department," said Connally ISD. "Our hope is that the closure and holiday break will provide those who are positive with the virus or exposed to others with the virus, the time to isolate and recover."

"We know the hardship this may present to families, but we want to do everything we can to ensure the health and safety of our students and team," said Connally ISD in a statement. "Please continue to monitor for symptoms and if your child tests positive for Covid-19, contact your students’ campus nurse.”

The district will offer COVID-19 rapid testing for students, parents, and staff and host a free vaccination clinic on September 13th from 5 - 7 p.m. in the Connally High School Gymnasium. Staff, parents, and the community will be eligible to receive the vaccine.
