Lone Star Middle School Names Official Mascot

SAN ANGELO, TX – After a months-long, student-led process, what will be Lone Star Middle School announced Monday, February 1, 2021 that the school has adopted a new mascot and logo.

According to SAISD, beginning in July 2021 when Lee Middle School officially transitions to the new name of Lone Star Middle School, the new mascot for the school will be the Texans, represented by a logo depicting a longhorn with a lone star emblazoned on the forehead. School colors will remain the traditional blue and silver.

Throughout the month of January, a student leadership team met weekly for the mascot selection process. The collaborative student-led process was designed to celebrate student voice and help create spirit and unity around the new mascot as well as inspire greatness. Over 100 campus-wide mascot suggestions were submitted from students and staff. The student leaders then vetted the potential names and collaborated to create a list of top contenders, with the final selection incorporating elements from several student-favored submissions.

“I am extremely proud of our student leaders, who led our campus by listening to their classmates’ and teachers’ voice throughout the process,” said Principal Amy Lemaster. “We know that when we collaborate, we can honor our history and embrace our future at the same time.”

The new mascot and logo were revealed to students and staff today. The logo design was created internally by San Angelo ISD Communications Specialist Jack Wilcox with inspiration from the student leadership process. The visual representation of the longhorn was added from student suggestions, and is also a nod to the historic significance longhorns have locally. San Angelo State Park is home to a herd of longhorns that are a result of a conservation effort that began in the 1920s after a decline in the population of the breed, according to information from Texas Parks and Wildlife. The San Angelo State Park herd is one of four herds across Texas originating from a herd donated to the state in 1941. A bronze sculpture of a longhorn is located nearby the middle school at the intersection of Pecos Street and Sherwood Way as well.

Selection of the new mascot followed the December 2020 San Angelo ISD Board of Trustees 5 to 2 vote in favor of changing the name of Lee Middle School to Lone Star Middle School, the 6 to 1 vote to retire the name of Lee Middle School by the Board on October 2020, and an extensive five-month collaborative process initiated by San Angelo ISD called Engaging Equity to consider the retention or renaming of Lee Middle School.

The student leadership team will now begin working on a new school pledge. San Angelo ISD is proud of the students and staff for working collaboratively and creatively to select a mascot that will unite the school in pride as one Lone Star family and inspire future students. The District appreciates the feedback and participation from our community in the Engaging Equity process.
