Midland Resident Sues Midland ISD Board of Trustees Over School Name Change

MIDLAND, TX — Days after the Midland Lee Naming Committee announced the top five contenders for the high school’s new name the Midland ISD Board of Trustees is now facing a lawsuit.

According to Jeremy Shane Mansell, he didn’t agree with the online petition that ultimately decided the controversial name change. He alleges there is no proof that the people who responded to the petition actually live in the school district.

In the lawsuit, Mansell contends the Board of Trustees did not appropriately calculate the costs associated with the name change. He argues the cost could range from $400,000 to $2,000,000.

Mansell hopes the lawsuit will lead to a temporary restraining order that could become a permanent injunction that would prevent the name change.

The naming committee is set to narrow down the list to three names. The name change would ultimately affect Robert E. Lee Senior High and Robert E. Lee Freshman.
