Here We Go Again: First Day of School Increases Traffic and Safety Concerns

SAN ANGELO, TX -- More that 14,400 students returned to classes on 24 campuses in the San Angelo Independent School District on Wednesday.

The SAISD tweeted Wednesday afternoon, "with school back in session, we want to remind everyone to drive safely around school zones and buses."

The tweet says Be flexible with your time in school zones.  Travel within school zones may be longer than expected.

During the first three weeks of school, pedestrian numbers increase in school zones.  Look for students on sidewalks, in cross walks and around school zones.

With school buses, when a bus stops for loading or unloading, the stop arm is displayed and the flashing lights will be on.

Buses also stop at railroad crossings and for emergencies. Drivers are urged to slow down around buses and stop when the lights are flashing.

In an effort to increase safety and security on campuses, signs outfit SAISD bus lanes, driveway entry and exit points, and drop off/pickup lanes.

Drivers are cautioned to leave early and slow down and look for younger drivers around the high school campuses.
