Smithson Named Regional Elementary Teacher of the Year

SAN ANGELO, TX — (Press Release) Fort Concho Elementary fifth grade science teacher Macy Smithson has been named the Region 15 Elementary Teacher of the Year.  Smithson, who has taught in SAISD for nine years, was selected as the Fort Concho Elementary Teacher of the Year in the spring.  She was named the SAISD Elementary Teacher of the Year during the district’s annual ceremony in May.

Smithson, a graduate of Texas Tech University, has taught at Fort Concho for three years. In that time, she has left a huge impact in the lives of the students she has taught. Her passion for kids and learning is evident in everything she does.

During her first year at Fort Concho, Smithson revamped the school's weeklong Science and Leadership Camp, aligning the curriculum to the school's high priority learning standards. She also co-sponsors the school's Spirit Squad and organizes the school's Self-Manager program, a campus leadership program for fifth graders that empowers students to contribute to the daily operations of the school and show leadership through service. Smithson also contributes to the district curriculum writing process and the Technology Vanguard team.

As Region 15 Teacher of the Year, Smithson is one of twenty elementary teachers vying for the State Elementary Teacher of the Year title. This fall, three elementary finalists will be selected and interviewed by the Texas Association of School Administrators prior to naming the state recipient.
