Central High School Speech & Debate Has Success at UIL State Meet

SAN ANGELO, TX — Members of the San Angelo Central High School Speech & Debate Team competed in the 2018 Speech & Debate UIL State Meet in Austin, TX on Sunday, May 20.

Junior Andrea Meador-Safont was the State Champion in GA Poetry Interpretation.

Senior Alfredo Antu won 2nd place in GA Prose Interpretation. The team also won the 2nd place Team Sweepstakes.

Antu was also selected as a finalist for National Student of the Year. Each year, district Student of the Year awards are presented to graduating seniors in each district who best represent the tenets of the National Speech & Debate Association's Code of Honor: integrity, respect, humility, leadership, and service. Nominees also demonstrate strong academic credentials and a commitment to the speech and debate community.

Six students who won their district's award are then selected as finalists for the William Woods Tate, Jr., National Student of the Year award.

Antu was selected as one of these students out of 140,000 district winners. He will interview with a panel of distinguished judges at Nationals in Florida this summer to possibly win the title of National Student of the Year.

The Speech and Debate coach is Julie Schniers.
