ASU Theater Program will Present "Julius Caesar" This Fall

 

Angelo State University’s  Theater program will present William Shakespeare’s classic “Julius Caesar” for its first production of the fall semester beginning Friday, Oct. 14, in the ASU Auditorium.

Performances will be at 8 p.m. Oct. 14-15 and 21-22, with a matinee performance at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 16. Tickets are $10 for the general public, $5 for non-ASU students, and free for ASU students, Arts at ASU subscribers and ASU Activity Card holders. The ASU Auditorium is located in the Mayer Administration Building, 2601 W. Avenue N.

In addition to the public shows, ASU will host about 1,600 students from West Texas high schools for private educational matinee performances on Oct. 14, 20 and 21.

“Julius Caesar” is one of the great tragedy themed plays by William Shakespeare. The title character is a highly ambitious political leader in Rome, and his aim is to become dictator. Caesar is warned that he must “beware the Ides of March.” The prophecy comes true and Caesar is assassinated due to the plotting of Marcus Brutus and Cassius. The friend of Julius Caesar, Mark Antony, provides the famous funeral oration that begins, “Friends, Romans and countrymen…” Brutus and Cassius meet their inevitable defeat, which plunges the country into civil war.

Mike Burnett, assistant director of University Theatre, and Dr. Erin Ashworth-King, associate professor of English, are co-directing the production from a script adapted by Ashworth-King. The student cast is composed of Driana Bramer, Megan Croyle, Sabrina Idom, Matthew Jackson, Cheyenne Mickler, Michael Oriano, Eli Rodriguez, Imani Ross, Jacob Scott and Neeley Watson.

The student production staff and crew include Tessa Verner, stage manager; Kyungah Lee, assistant stage manager; Kelsey Pippin, dramaturg; Samantha Lewis, scenic designer; Julia McDaniel, lighting designer; Kala Young, costume designer; Callie Stenson, sound designer; Lindsey Jones, projection designer; Arianna Gonzalez, film and social media designer; Kameron Dennis, prop master; Phillip Fuller, master carpenter/deck chief; Nickolas Gupton, master electrician/light board operator; Katharine Patrick, sound board operator; Natalie McCurdy, projection operator; Aaron May, wardrobe supervisor; So Yeon Park and Aaron Santellano, wardrobe crew/dressers; and Simone Hutchison, house manager. 

Chasity Neutze is ASU’s resident costumer, and Greg Gonzales is the resident technical director.

Tickets go on sale Wednesday, Oct. 5, at the ASU box office in the Carr Education-Fine Arts Building, 2602 Dena Drive. The box office is open 2-6 p.m. weekdays. For reservations and ticket information, call 325-942-2000.
