SAN ANGELO, TX - This morning, the San Angelo ISD rallied in the new 2016-2017 semester with inspirational music. This music illustrated an appreciation for the nation’s military at Foster Communications Coliseum.
Superintendent for SAISD, Carl Dethloff, began the district's annual convocation by acknowledging some of the key members present like new Chief of Police Frank Carter and San Angelo Mayor Dwayne Morrison.
“We are proud to unite as a team SAISD by displaying our academic pride as we begin this upcoming school year,” Dethloff said.
He acknowledged that the parents, teachers, administrators, and the many public service members present all contribute to the future of SAISD’s education.
“We will produce learners who are faster in their pursuit of knowledge, who will achieve higher graduation rates, and are stronger in their preparation for the 21st century job market,” Dethloff said.
The music performed during the convocation was a joint collaboration from the bands, choir, and orchestras from Lake View and Central High schools. The Central HS Junior Reserves Officer Training Corps presented the colors during the ceremony.
Approximately 515 students have parents who serve at Goodfellow Air Force Base. Thus, leadership from Goodfellow were present during the ceremony like Colonel Michael Downs, Base Commander.
The music played was also a testament to the U.S. Military and the sacrifice they make to provide a safe learning environment for children to learn across the nation.
Aaron Jackson, JROTC cadet at Central HS, performed in front of the crowed during the flag presentation.
“It wasn’t bad because I’ve performed at big events like this before,” Jackson said. “It felt good to represent my school.”
Aaron has been in JROTC for one year and said he looks forward to continuing in the program as an upcoming sophomore cadet.
“I’m looking forward to the school year with JROTC because of the drill competitions, and presenting the colors at football games for Central.”
Ben Balliew, a parent who attended the convocation, acknowledged how uplifting the ceremony is and how it prepares everyone for the upcoming school year.
“It’s inspirational getting to see all the kids perform, whether it be during the pledges, or the choir and band performances,” Balliew said.
He added that he has a 10-year-old daughter who attends Fort Concho Elementary and will be starting in the 5th grade this school year.
“I hope everyone can get off to a good start, and do our best to inspire the kids to keep learning,” Balliew noted.
SAISD's annual convocation provides a chance for everyone to come out and prepare for the new school year.
