The word "concussion" can be a scary term to someone unfamiliar with its causes, symptoms, and aftercare. According to the National Safety Council, every three minutes a child in the U.S. is treated for a sports-related concussion. Signs and symptoms of concussion include: confusion, forgetfulness, glassy eyes, disorientation, clumsiness or poor balance, slowed speech, changes in mood, behavior or personality.
Whether you are a parent, athlete, healthcare worker, or just an individual interested in learning more on the topic of concussions, this weekend a free seminar will be held locally.
Dr. Leslie Hutchins is a Neurosurgeon at the Shannon Brain and Spine Institute, and will be the featured speaker at a 2-hour "Concussion Seminar." Topics include: Baseline Testing, identifying concussion symptoms, treatment resources and more. Dr. Hutchins is a 2008 graduate of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas having completed her Residency at the Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia.
Amber Higgins, assistant to Dr. Hutchins said, "The event will be Saturday, August 6, from 10 a.m. until noon at the San Angelo Country Club Ballroom, 1609 Country Club Road. There is no charge and the public is invited, but are encouraged to RSVP to: [email protected]. Beverages and light snacks will be provided. This is not for continuing education credits; it is just for the goodwill of the community as a way for Dr. Hutchins to give back."
