Angelo State University Presents Holiday Astronomy Shows

 

The Angelo State University Planetarium will present two full-dome public astronomy shows during its 2015 holiday schedule, said a press release Tuesday. The shows begin December 3 and will take place in the Vincent Nursing-Physical Science Building at 2333 Vanderventer St.

"Season of Light" will run each Thursday, December 3-17 at 7 p.m. "Lewis & Clark: Great Journey West" will follow at 8 p.m. Additionally, both shows will run on Saturday, December 5, at 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. respectively.

All shows will be open to the public. Admission prices are $3 for adults and $2 for children, active military and senior citizens. ASU students, faculty and staff are admitted free.

According to the press release, "Season of Light" examines Celtic, pagan, Nordic, Roman, Egyptian, and Hopi winter solstice rituals, along with Jewish and Christian practices, which includes the possible astronomical explanations for the "Star fo Bethlehem."

Holiday traditions such as gift giving, kissing under the mistletoe, and decking the halls with greenery will also be explored. Legends such as St. Nicholas and Kris Kringle will also be examined. The program will be narrated by National Public Radio's Noah Adams and is sponsored by the San Angelo Standard-Times.

Additionally, "Lewis & Clark: Great Journey West" will explore the dawn of our new nation. Two captains led 31 people, including one woman and her infant son, to the Pacific Ocean and back. The audience will experience this journey. This program is narrated by award-winning actor Jeff Bridges.
