Fort Concho Elementary Drama Club Honors Veterans with a Performance

Veteran’s Day is a day we set aside to commemorate and honor those who have served their country. This morning, the Fort Concho Elementary School Drama Club showed their gratitude by performing a play showcasing important people and symbols in our country's history. Additionally, veterans and those with family who have served were asked to stand for a round of applause and recognition for their service and sacrifice.

The principal of Fort Concho Elementary, Lori Barton, explained she was excited for the students to present this program because it was a great way to honor and show appreciation to all those who have served.

“We have lots of military in San Angelo with Goodfellow,” Barton said. “[This] teaches our kids to be patriotic and shows them that respect and character are important. Any opportunity we get to show them why we have these freedoms, then we obviously want to do that.”

During the play, some of the important people and symbols the Drama Club acknowledged were George Washington, Betsy Ross, the Statue of Liberty and the bald eagle. Many of the kids portrayed presidents our country had during times of war. Timeless quotes and fun facts about these historical figures greatly entertained the crowd who accumulated in the gym at Fort Concho Elementary.

After the morning presentation, Barton said the Drama Club’s directors, Tammy Fluitt and Debbie Lopez, who helped coordinate the presentation, and the kids will be traveling around San Angelo to nursing homes, including Rio Concho Manor and Baptist Memorial.

“They really wanted to share their appreciation to veterans in the nursing homes,” Barton explained.

Overall, the Fort Concho Drama Club puts on two productions a year, and this year, they wanted to do something to honor the men and women in uniform. Barton said she couldn’t have been more proud of the students’ efforts.
