Angelo State University’s Alpha Psi Omega (APO) theatre honor society will sponsor performances on Thursday, May 21, by two Concho Valley high schools that have productions advancing to the University Interscholastic League One-Act Play State Meet.
Christoval High School will present “August: Osage County,” directed by ASU alumnus Travis Morganstean, at 6:30 p.m. in the ASU Auditorium. Miles High School will present “Big Love,” directed by Karyn Brown, at approximately 7:30 p.m. The auditorium is located in the Mayer Administration Building, 2601 W. Avenue N. Doors will open at 6 p.m. and admission is free although donations will be accepted.
Winner of the 2008 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, “August: Osage County” was made into a 2013 movie starring Julia Roberts, Juliette Lewis and Meryl Streep. Set in Oklahoma, it tells the story of a family’s pill-popping mother and three sisters who explode in a maelstrom of repressed truths and unsettling secrets, unflinchingly and uproariously exposing the dark side of the midwestern American family.
“Big Love,” which premiered in its full-length version in 2000, modernizes an ancient Greek play, “The Suppliants” by Aeschylus. Fifty brides flee their country to avoid marrying their 50 cousins, who soon follow. The play uses humor to address contemporary issues from refugees and gender wars to dysfunctional relationships, duty and love.
