ASU Symphony’s ‘Fright Night’

Angelo State University Symphony, under the direction of Dr. Maurice Kelley, will present a “Fright Night” concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30, at Sierra Vista Methodist Church, 4522 College Hills Blvd.

A premiere for ASU’s first full symphony orchestra in a number of years, the concert also will feature guest soloist Sariah McCracken on cello. The event is free and open to the public.

“We’ve added a full wind section,” said Kelley, a visiting professor of music. “In the past, we were a string orchestra and now we are a symphony orchestra. This allows us to play more literature, more things that people will recognize.”

The premiere will include the first movement of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 1 in C major, Op. 21. The rest of the program follows the “Fright Night” theme, including “Legend of Sleepy Hollow” by Richard Meyer, “Peer Gynt” Suite No. 1 by Edward Grieg, “Danse Macabre” by Camille Saint-Saens, and “Funeral March of a Marionette” by Charles Gounod. Dr. Constance Kelley, ASU’s interim director of bands, will serve as the master of ceremonies.

In conjunction with the concert, a poster contest will be held in the lobby prior to the concert. Patrons will be asked to vote on posters created by senior ASU digital design students under the guidance of Edwin Cuenco of the art faculty. The winner will be announced during the concert.
