UPDATE: Manhunt Called Off Due to Severe Weather
SAN ANGELO, TX — A manhunt following a vehicle theft and police pursuit was called off Monday evening due to the threat of severe weather in the area, according to the San Angelo Police Department.
Police released details about the manhunt that occurred on Arden Rd in west San Angelo on Monday, May 26.
A man allegedly stole a vehicle from a home in the 900 block of Shiloh Drive early Wednesday afternoon and leading law enforcement on a high-speed chase out of San Angelo city limits.
According to San Angelo Police, the incident began around 2:49 p.m. when a woman started her disabled vehicle using a jump starter and returned inside her residence. Moments later, she heard a door slam and saw the vehicle being driven away at a high rate of speed. She immediately called 911.
Officers in the area quickly located the stolen vehicle, initiating a pursuit that continued onto Arden Road. The suspect eventually abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot into a nearby field.
Multiple agencies, including the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), San Angelo Police Drone Team, and Texas Game Wardens, assisted in the ongoing search. A DPS helicopter was also deployed to aid in locating the suspect.
Authorities were searching for a male suspect, but no further description or identifying information was immediately available.
If apprehended, the suspect is expected to face charges including unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, evading arrest in a vehicle, and evading on foot. Additional charges may be filed depending on what is found in the recovered vehicle.
Officers reported speeds in excess of 120 mph during the pursuit, though officials noted the difficulty in confirming exact speeds during active chases due to safety priorities.
