Second Suspect Arrested in Big Spring Officer-Involved Shooting

BIG SPRING, TX — The second suspect in an early morning officer-involved shooting that wounded a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper and left one suspect dead has been arrested, authorities announced late Monday.

The Texas Department of Public Safety said 30-year-old David Morales of Big Spring was taken into custody without incident by DPS Special Operations Group, in coordination with the joint Big Spring Police Department-Howard County Sheriff’s Office Tactical Team. He was apprehended at the Westover Hills Apartments, near the scene of the shooting in the 500 block of Westover Road.

Morales is being held at the Howard County Jail. Authorities said he had an outstanding arrest warrant for parole violation stemming from charges of delivery of a controlled substance and burglary of a habitation.

The arrest resolves the manhunt that followed the incident, which began around 12:40 a.m. on Feb. 23. According to DPS, a trooper attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle for a violation. The vehicle failed to stop, leading the trooper to perform a PIT maneuver. It veered into bushes, and two suspects fled on foot.

During the foot pursuit, one suspect fired shots at the trooper, who returned fire. One suspect was killed at the scene, while the second — now identified as Morales — initially escaped.

The wounded trooper was transported to a hospital in the Lubbock area and remains in stable condition.

The Texas Rangers are leading the ongoing investigation, with assistance from the Big Spring Police Department and Howard County Sheriff’s Office.
