SAN ANGELO, TX — A Fort Worth woman has been sentenced after accepting a plea deal in a San Angelo fatal stabbing case, marking the second sentencing connected to the incident.
Court records show that Shevetra Mathis, 26, was booked into the Tom Green County Detention Center on Nov. 14 on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Mathis received a two-year sentence to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice in exchange for a guilty plea.
Mathis and 27-year-old Ebony Gasca were arrested in connection to a stabbing that occurred Dec. 26, 2023, resulting in the death of Jermaine Johnson, who was in a relationship with Gasca at the time. Both women were indicted on April 17, 2024.
Gasca was booked into the county jail on Oct. 27, 2025, after a jury found her guilty of Class A misdemeanor assault following a trial that began Oct. 20.
According to an affidavit, San Angelo Police officers were dispatched to the 300 block of West 13th Street at about 6:35 p.m. on Dec. 26, 2023, for a report of “unknown problems.” Officers found Johnson suffering from two stab wounds. He was taken to Shannon Medical Center, where he later died.
Investigators learned through witness interviews and phone, photo, and video evidence that a verbal confrontation began at a residence on West 13th Street and continued as the group traveled to a Dollar General store, where the argument escalated. Gasca reported that she struck Johnson after he struck her and that the dispute continued when they returned to the residence.
Gasca told investigators that Johnson grabbed her phone, leading her to retrieve a homemade knife she described as a “prison shank.” She stated she stabbed Johnson “approximately two times” during the confrontation.
In a separate interview, Mathis said she witnessed Johnson place Gasca in a chokehold and, believing she needed to intervene, obtained a knife from inside the residence and stabbed Johnson once in the chest. Mathis also admitted she did not call police and acknowledged the knife was capable of causing serious injury or death.
Video reviewed by investigators showed Johnson and Gasca engaged in a physical verbal altercation but did not show the stabbing.
Both cases remain part of the ongoing court record.
