SAN ANGELO, TX — Former TLCA San Angelo athletic director Kent Sherrill was arrested Tuesday night after he was indicted on eight felony counts by a Tom Green County grand jury.
The indictments — which included four counts of injury to a child and four counts of abandoning or endangering a child — stemmed from a February incident in which coaches punished athletes by having them do hundreds of pushups.
Students estimated they did between 300 and 420 pushups, according to a lawsuit that was filed against the school by 12 families.
Twenty children were taken to the hospital, and many of them were diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis, a serious condition caused by rapid skeletal muscle breakdown that can lead to kidney and organ damage, the lawsuit stated.
Shannon Medical Center staff notified Child Protective Services and law enforcement.
Sherrill, 51, had been a successful basketball coach at the school and was later promoted to athletic director. Sherill and former head football coach Bradley Oh both left the school following the incident.
Each count that Sherrill is facing carries a maximum sentence of two years in a state jail facility.
The indictment also lists four co-defendants: Oh, Stetson Emfinger, Brandon Richardson and Emmanuel Serna, all of whom were also named in the lawsuit. It is unknown if any of the other individuals have been arrested.
