San Angelo Man Indicted for December Drive-By Shooting

SAN ANGELO, TX — A San Angelo man has been indicted for a drive-by shooting following a fight.

Alfredo Chavez, 21, of San Angelo, was indicted by a Tom Green County grand jury for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and deadly conduct by discharge of a firearm.

According to court documents, on Dec. 3, San Angelo police were dispatched to the Shell Station, 705 N. Main St., for reports of a fight. While the investigator was driving to the location, another call for service reported a drive-by shooting at North Magdalen Street and East 10th Street. Officers learned that both events had the same individuals involved.

After reading the reports, the investigator learned that a fight broke out between several parties against the victim’s nephew in the parking lot of the Shell Station just before 4:30 p.m. When the fight was over, five subjects who assaulted the victim’s nephew left the scene in a brown vehicle and a white vehicle.

Surveillance video from the Shell Station was reviewed and it showed Chavez, wearing a black and yellow hoodie and having face tattoos, entering the driver’s seat of the white vehicle after the fight. Two more individuals entered the vehicle, which then left the scene.

The call for service for the drive-by occurred around 4:30 p.m. and it involved the victim’s vehicle being shot three times. Three spent .40 caliber casings were recovered from the crime scene.

The investigator spoke with the victim and was advised that he was inside the store when the fight occurred between his nephew and the other subjects. Once the victim left the store, Chavez and the others entered their vehicles and drove away.

When the victim left the Shell Station, he observed both the brown car and white car following him. He advised that he made several turns to see if the vehicle was in fact following him, which they were. The victim slammed on his brakes to come to a stop, and the brown car swerved out of the way. His nephew said to him that there was a gun, so the victim looked into the driver’s side mirror.

Chavez allegedly had his arm out of the window of the white vehicle holding a gun. The victim heard gunshots being fired before both vehicles drove away. He exited his truck and realized that his truck had been shot three times.

Due to the time frame, video corroboration, and evidence from the crime scene, the investigator believed there was sufficient probable cause that Chavez discharged a firearm at the victim.

Chavez was arrested on Dec. 8, 2024, and remains an inmate in the Tom Green County Jail since being held on a $221,420 bond. Chavez has a jury trial set for Aug. 4, 2025.
