Routine Traffic Inspection Leads to ICE Arrest in San Angelo, 1 Person Still at Large

SAN ANGELO, TX — A routine inspection of a commercial vehicle Thursday turned into a manhunt after a passenger fled from the truck in north San Angelo.

The incident occurred about 4:40 p.m. when a commercial vehicle enforcement officer was performing a routine inspection near the intersection of North Bryant Boulevard and West 33rd Street, according to DPS Sergeant Steven Blanco.

The passenger ran from the vehicle toward the vicinity of Riverside Golf Course.

Despite law enforcement searching the area extensively, the suspect was never located, Blanco said.

However, the driver of the truck, Carlos Jose Velasquez-Varela, 29, was arrested and booked into Tom Green County Jail on an ICE immigration detainer.
