AUSTIN, TX – Texas law enforcement agencies have seized over 622 million lethal doses of fentanyl during border operations, enough to potentially kill every person in the United States, Mexico, and Canada combined, according to a press release from Governor Greg Abbott’s office.
This major drug interception is part of Operation Lone Star, a multi-agency initiative aimed at curbing illegal immigration, human trafficking, and drug smuggling along the Texas border. Since its launch, the operation has led to more than 530,600 illegal immigrant apprehensions and over 50,000 criminal arrests, including 43,000 felony charges.
In addition to drug seizures, the operation has reportedly reduced illegal crossings into Texas by 87%, according to state officials. The effort includes transporting migrants to sanctuary cities to alleviate pressure on border communities. Since April 2022, Texas has relocated migrants to cities including Washington, D.C. (12,500 migrants), New York City (45,900), and Chicago (36,900), among others.
The press release also highlighted the operation’s role in filling what officials described as “gaps” left by federal border security policies.
"Operation Lone Star continues to fill the dangerous gaps created by the federal government’s refusal to secure the border," information stated. "Every individual who is apprehended or arrested and every ounce of drugs seized would have otherwise made their way into communities across Texas and the nation due to open border policies."
