BROWNSVILLE/HIDALGO, TX — U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers seized more than $7.5 million in narcotics at two Texas border crossings this past weekend, intercepting hundreds of pounds of illegal drugs in separate incidents.
At the Brownsville Port of Entry on Dec. 15, CBP officers discovered 245 pounds of cocaine, valued at over $3.3 million, hidden within a utility trailer at the Veterans International Bridge.
Officers used a canine unit and a non-intrusive inspection system to locate 100 packages of narcotics inside the trailer. A 50-year-old Mexican citizen driving the vehicle was arrested alongside a passenger, and a criminal investigation is underway.
At the Hidalgo Port of Entry on Dec. 13, CBP officers intercepted over $4.2 million in methamphetamine and heroin during an inspection of a 2013 Chrysler van. Using similar detection tools, officers found 442 pounds of methamphetamine in 30 packages and nearly 18 pounds of heroin in two additional packages.
The seized drugs were turned over to the High-Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) Task Force, which arrested the driver and began a criminal investigation.
