UPDATE: Suspect Accused of Shooting Abilene Police Officer Dies After Standoff

 

ABILENE, TX — James Wesley Key, the man accused of shooting an Abilene police officer during a traffic stop Tuesday, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound after an hours-long standoff, according to the Abilene Police Department on Friday morning.

Authorities had been searching for Key, 39, since Tuesday night and offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to his arrest.

The traffic stop occurred about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 1700 block of Roosevelt Street. According to police, Key opened fire on the officer before fleeing on foot.

The injured officer was transported to the hospital, treated and released.

A DPS helicopter and additional resources were deployed to aid in locating Key, according to KTXS12. 

Additional details about the traffic stop have not been released.
