WILSON’S MILLS, N.C. – A Tesla driver was arrested Friday afternoon in Wilson’s Mills after police found him asleep at the wheel with the autopilot function activated.
The traffic stop led to the discovery of thousands of dollars’ worth of drugs, including vape pens laced with methamphetamine and MDMA, authorities stated.
Michael Goodman, 25, of Lenoir County, was taken into custody after police officers observed his vehicle cruising down US 70 while he appeared to be asleep.
Despite the officers activating their lights and sirens, Goodman remained unresponsive. Wright credited the successful stop to a colleague familiar with Tesla’s technology, who was able to wake Goodman by activating a sensor on the vehicle’s autopilot.
Once Goodman was awake and the vehicle stopped, officers discovered the laced vape pens in the car. He now faces four felony charges, including trafficking meth and MDMA, along with reckless driving.
Goodman is currently being held in custody pending further court proceedings.
