Texas DPS Confirms Odessa Murder Suspect Shot and Killed in Mertzon

IRION COUNTY, TX — He was shot and killed by law enforcement, according to the Texas DPS.

"The man believed to be the murder suspect is deceased following an officer-involved shooting earlier today," read the statement.

The Texas Rangers are investigating the officer-involved shooting as is customary.

"More information will be released when available," stated the DPS

The suspect for a murder in Odessa led multiple agencies of law enforcement and the Texas DPS on a chase in at least two vehicles and four counties culminating in a 30-hour manhunt in western Irion County that started Monday.

He was suspected of gunning down 74-year-old Ronald Wayne Irvin of Ector County in his own driveway before absconding away in a stolen 2014 black Ford Mustang. He ditched the Mustang in Irion County, fled on foot for about a half mile before stealing another vehicle from a fencing crew working along the roadway at a nearby ranch.

He ditched the Tahoe shortly thereafter and led DPS and other law enforcement agencies in a 30-hour manhunt in the ranchlands west and northwest of Mertzon.

DPS has not named the suspected murderer who was shot and killed today.
