Drunk Driver Sentenced for Gruesome Death of Pedestrian in 2020

 

SAN ANGELO— A San Angelo man was sent to prison Wednesday for Intoxication Manslaughter in the gruesome death of a pedestrian during a drunk driving crash in Lake View. 

Brian Castillo, 33, was arrested in 2020 for Intoxication Manslaughter with a Vehicle was in court today and took a plea deal that sentenced him to prison for nearly a decade.

According to court documents, on March 14, 2020, San Angelo Police responded to the 1200 block of North Oakes Street for a fatal crash. The initial police reports states that a 2014 Black Dodge sedan, driven by Castillo, was traveling northbound when he crossed the center of the roadway into the southbound lanes and struck a power pole and a pedestrian.

The pedestrian, identified as Johnell Hornsby, succumbed to his wounds and died on scene.

A witness who was on scene at the time of the crash said that Castillo was sitting in the driver’s seat of the vehicle that hit Hornsby. The witness assisted in helping Castillo out of the vehicle and smelled a strong odor of alcohol on his breath.

At first, Castillo said he was the passenger in the vehicle before admitting he was the driver. He kept trying to leave the scene and asked the witness not to call an ambulance. Castillo became aggressive a few times which caused the witness to push Castillo to avoid getting into a physical altercation.

Castillo was arrested on March 14, 2020, and was released that same day on $35,000 bond. He was indicted in September 2020 and was arrested again on March 14, 2024. In exchange for a guilty plea, Castillo was sentenced to eight years in prison.
