SAN ANTONIO, TX — Isaac Gonzales, a 17-year-old, faces murder charges related to a car theft and drive by shooting on October 5, 2023. Gonzales, along with another teen, allegedly stole a car and proceeded to a residence near Bald Mountain Drive, close to Marbach Road in San Antonio. The duo opened fire on the wrong house, resulting in the death of Novita Brazil, 25, and the injury of another individual.
Gonzales’ arrest came after the arrest of his 15-year-old co-defendant.
Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar ripped the teens at the Tuesday news conference when he said, “These are just, in my opinion, bloodthirsty young heathens with no regard for human life. I'm happy that we were able to put him behind bars."
Gonzales and the 15-year-old shot up the house, thinking they were shooting at the home of a group of gang members who had shot at them, authorities said.
“But tragically enough, they struck the wrong house,” Salazar said. “They hit the next-door neighbor.”
One hundred rounds were fired. Brazil was killed instantly.
“She was a completely innocent bystander, just a young lady working her way through college, doing her homework during the wee hours of the night, burning the midnight oil,” Salazar said.
A 41-year-old woman in town for a San Antonio Spurs game — renting a room for the night — was wounded as she slept, Salazar said.
Police quickly found the suspected shooters in a stolen KIA and engaged them in a high-speed chase. Along the way, the suspects allegedly dumped several guns Salazar said were used in the shooting, including a small assault-style rifle, authorities said
After an initial arrest, Gonzales was released on bond. Subsequently, he reportedly removed his ankle monitor and went on the run. The I-Team investigation revealed that a judge was compelled to release Gonzales on a personal recognizance bond as the Bexar County District Attorney's Office failed to indict him within the mandated 90-day period.
During his time at large, Gonzales taunted members of the Bexar County Gang Unit by posting a photo on social media with multiple firearms, accompanied by the caption, "Tell everyone at the gang unit I said catch me." The Sheriff's Office managed to apprehend Gonzales on Halloween, but not before he and his co-defendant, a 15-year-old Gonzales, allegedly committed additional crimes, according to Sheriff Salazar. And then this next video is the gang unit doing just that. So, as you can see, extremely cocky, very confident young man, confident that he’s going to take full advantage of the legal system,” said Salazar.
In a recent court appearance, as Gonzales was about to enter a guilty plea, the judge unexpectedly halted the proceedings. Further developments in the case are expected to unfold as legal proceedings continue.
A GoFundMe page said Brazil was from Indonesia, living in San Antonio with her husband of three years. Salazar said her husband was in the military stationed there.
