Clearing the Air: In a Surprise Move, President Biden Pardons Potheads

WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Biden Friday announced he is pardoning everyone in federal prison for simple marijuana possession charges and is urging state governments to do the same.

According to the Whitehouse, Biden reaffirmed the foundational American principle of equal justice under law, supported by elected officials from both political spectrums, faith leaders, civil rights advocates, and law enforcement leaders. Acknowledging the importance of aligning the criminal justice system with this fundamental value for safer and stronger communities, the President announced further measures aimed at realizing the promise of equal justice.

"I am taking additional steps today to make equal justice a reality," the President said.

As part of these actions, the President has commuted the sentences of 11 individuals serving excessively long terms for non-violent drug offenses. It was noted that each of them would have been eligible for significantly reduced sentences if charged with the same offense under current laws.

Additionally, in continuation of prior pardons for federal and D.C. offenses related to simple possession of marijuana, the President issued a Proclamation extending pardons to cover further cases of simple possession and use of marijuana under federal and D.C. jurisdictions. The President highlighted the adverse impact of criminal records for marijuana use and possession, citing unnecessary barriers to employment, housing, and educational opportunities. Emphasizing the repercussions of the nation's past approach to marijuana, the President underscored the need to rectify these consequences.

The President stressed the importance of aligning local and state practices with federal actions, stating, "Just as no one should be incarcerated in a federal prison solely due to marijuana use or possession, the same principle applies to local jails and state prisons." The President urged state Governors to take similar actions and lauded those who have already done so.

Highlighting a high level of clemency actions compared to predecessors at this point in the presidency, the President asserted an ongoing commitment to reviewing clemency petitions and implementing reforms promoting equal justice, addressing racial disparities, fortifying public safety, and fostering the welfare of all Americans.

The recent announcement represents a significant stride toward justice, with the Administration pledging to continue pursuing initiatives that advance these crucial objectives.
