Killer of Beloved Angelo State Professor Sentenced

CALEDONIA, MS – The convicted killer of Angelo State University Professor Natalie Ryan Fraser has been sentenced to 20 years in a Mississippi prison.

According to a news report from Caledonia on September 2, 2023, a Lowndes County jury found Wayne Fraser guilty of Culpable Negligent Manslaughter. As a result of the guilty verdict, Fraser was sentenced to 20 years in prison and fined $10,000.

Throughout the trial, the District Attorney's office portrayed Fraser as a man with a history of alcohol abuse and abuse towards his wheelchair-bound wife. The defense did not deny this history but argued that the problems were in the past.

They claimed that on the night in question, it was not abuse but rather a horrific accident.

As a result, the jury did not find him guilty of murder but instead convicted him of manslaughter for failing to seek medical attention for Ryan.

Fraser, originally from Scotland, was living in Mississippi, and Ryan was a professor at Angelo State University. On the night of her death, both Ryan and Fraser were highly intoxicated.

Following her death, ASU renamed the English department the Natalie Zan Ryan Department of English and Modern Language.
