New Mexico Teen Mom Found Guilty of Attempting to Kill her Newborn

ODESSA, TX – A Hobbs, NM woman was found guilty Friday by a jury in Odessa of causing bodily harm and Attempted Murder for placing her newborn child in a dumpster.

18-year-old Alexis Avila confessed to giving birth to the child at another place before throwing it away during initial investigations after the infant was found alive and taken to a hospital.

Days of testimony included statements from police and doctors. The jury saw evidence including the blood filled bed room and bathroom where Avila gave birth, the articles of trash the baby was with in the trash bag, and of course the infant.

The jury found Avila guilty of abuse of a child resulting in great bodily harm and attempt to commit first degree murder.

Avila will be sentenced by the court on May 1, 2023. She faces up to 18 years in prison.
