San Angelo Man Indicted for Beating a 7-Month-Old Child While High on Meth

SAN ANGELO- A San Angelo man has been indicted by a Tom Green County grand jury for injury to a child after he allegedly beat a 7-month-old chid in a drug induced high.

According to court documents, on March 15, 2022, a child was treated by Shannon Medial Center staff for medical evaluation due to multiple injuries to the child’s head, face, abdomen, and arm. Photographs taken of the 7-month-old child were observed by investigators and Shannon Medical Center staff confirmed the child recently sustained a broken posterior rib that was non-acute and healing.

Investigators spoke with a witness who stated on November 27 and 28, 2021 that she took the child to a residence on East 14th Street.

On November 28, the defendant, identified as Jorge Alonzo Resendez, called the witness in a panicked stated about the child crying. This witness drove to the residence and spoke with Resendez who allegedly said he hurt the child and appeared scared. The witness noticed bruising on the child’s face. Resendez said he had night terrors while co-sleeping with the child and said he “swatted” the 7-month-old on the face, stomach, body, and grabbed the child’s right arm.

The witness observed bruising and red marks and took photographs of the child and uploaded the photos on November 28, 2021.

The investigator looked at the images and observed a large oval bruise on the left side of the child’s abdomen over the left rib cage and stomach and extensive bruising under the child’s left eye and left cheek.

The child’s lower lip appeared to be swollen with red marks around both lips and the child’s nose was red and appeared swollen. There was extensive dark bruising under the child’s right eye and right cheek and extensive bruising to the child’s forehead and right and left temple.

Through training and experience, investigators know that the bruising on the abdomen occurs when organs are compressed between two hard objects.

Investigators spoke with Jorge Resendez in a non-custodial interview and stated he allegedly used methamphetamine on November 26, 2021.

The next day on November 27, 2021, Resendez took custody of the child from the witness at a residence on East 14th Street and said he was still under the influence of meth. Resendez said he was co-sleeping with the child in the early morning hours of November 28, 2021, and he was the only one at the residence.

Resendez said he felt his body go numb and he began to come down off his high and it was bad. He stated it was like his mind was asleep, but his body was awake.

Jorge Resendez said he could have punched the child with a closed fist in the face, head, and abdomen and could have slapped the child with an open hand in the face. Resendez also said he grabbed the child’s right arm, and he could have hit the child 5 or 6 times. He said he “smacked the crap” out of the child and the child was crying.

Resendez said the child’s injuries could have occurred while he was in a drug induced high.

Jorge was arrested on March 20, 2022 and is currently and inmate in the Tom Green County Detention Facility. His bond has been set at $150,000.00.
