UPDATE: San Angelo Man Indicted for Attacking a Bar Patron with an Axe Outside Popular Bar

SAN ANGELO – A San Angelo man has been indicted by a Tom Green County grand jury for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after allegedly attacking another man outside a popular bar with a hatchet in March 2022.

According to court documents, San Angelo police were dispatched to Fiddlestrings Bar and Patio, located at 3301 Arden Road regarding a fight that took place.

When officers arrived, they learned that all parties had fled the scene. Once officers were at scene, a call came into San Angelo Police Dispatch about an assault victim who sustained a head wound and needed to be transported to Shannon Medical Center for emergency treatment.

Officers then responded to the 2800 block of Rio Grande Street and made contact with the victim and a witness.

At Fiddlestrings, the defendant left a bar tab open under the name Fabian Mejia and it was verified that Mejia was the person associated with the credit/debit card on the tab.

Investigators spoke with a witness who stated that there was a verbal altercation between the victim, Mejia, and three other individuals that started over a pool game. The witness then said both parties went outside the bar into the parking lot.

There, Mejia allegedly attacked the victim with an axe/hatchet. The victim ended up bleeding badly and was taken away from the scene and eventually transported to the hospital. The witness also said the victim ended up with Mejia’s phone.

Shortly after the incident, the phone began ringing and receiving text messages. The witness answered the phone and spoke with a female who was with Mejia and was looking for the phone.

At Fiddlestrings, the investigator collected and viewed video surveillance footage that captured the fight.

The investigator was able to positively identify the person who produced the axe/hatchet weapon as Fabian Mejia by comparing it to recent jail arrest photographs and a profile picture off his Facebook.

At the hospital, the investigator spoke to the victim personally and learned the victim sustained severe injuries that were consistent with an edged weapon like an axe/hatchet. One injury was on the left side of the victim’s head and resulted in a skull fracture that caused bone fragments to be dispersed inside his cranial cavity.

Fabian Mejia was arrested on May 4th, 2022 and is currently and inmate in the Tom Green County Detention Facility. Mejia’s bond has been set at $100,000 and he cannot have contact with the victim.

UPDATE: (4:31 P.M.)

According to a witness at the scene, Mejia's group wanted to play pool for money to which the victim's group declined. This witness then stated Mejia was thrown out of the bar after causing trouble with another table.

Outside, when the victim and his friends were walking across the parking lot, this witness alleges that Mejia tried to run them over with his pick up. As the victim proceeded to walk to their vehicles, Mejia exited his truck and allegedly produced an axe/hatchet used to assault the victim.

This witness also said the victim's injuries were worse than a skull fracture.
