San Angelo Man Indicted for Running Over Police Officer with Vehicle Twice

SAN ANGELO, TX- A San Angelo man was indicted in March by a Tom Green County grand jury for running over a police officer twice after having a fight with a woman in January near Goodfellow Air Force Base.

According to court documents, on January 30, 2022, at 11:00 p.m., San Angelo police were dispatched to 850 Paint Rock Road for a domestic disturbance involving a male wearing red shorts and a tie dye t-shirt. This male had committed an assault and was trying to leave the scene in a vehicle.

Investigators learned from a responding officer that when he arrived, the officer located the man and a woman having a physical altercation near a vehicle. The officer exited his patrol car and made contact while he made contact with the defendant, identified as Devan Gamez, Gamez shoved the female victim away and attempted to get into a Kia Forte.

Gamez got into the driver seat of the Kia Forte and began trying to start the vehicle. The officer struggled with Gamez at the driver side door in an attempt to detain him for the assault.

Then, Gamez successfully started the Kia and intentionally put the vehicle in reserve and at a high rate of speed, knocked the officer to the ground. This caused the officer to become entangled under the driver side door, which was still open, and the front driver side tires ran over the officer’s legs.

After this, Gamez put the vehicle in drive and drove over the officer again with the rear driver side tire. He then stopped and exited the vehicle until he was apprehended by the officer he had just run over and other officers on scene.

Devan Gamez was arrested and booked into the Tom Green County Detention Facility on January 31, 2022, is currently an inmate, and has a $100,000.00 bond.

Aggravated assault against a public servant is a first-degree felony in Texas and carries a punishment of 5 to 99 years in prison and a $10,000.00 fine.
