SAN ANGELO, TX- A San Angelo Man has been indicted by a Tom Green County grand jury on 2 counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
On February 19, 2021, a San Angelo Police Officer responded to the area of 100 South Taylor Street after responding to a shooting call.
The officer met with the victims and learned that one of the victims was going to pick up the other victim from the Village Apartments, located at 2122 South Fillmore Street. When the victim that was getting picked up got into the car, two subjects got out of a silver Expedition and approached the victim’s vehicle. The subjects walked up to the vehicle and started hitting the windshield. One victim told the other that one of the subjects had a gun. The victim who was driving observed the weapon and began backing up the vehicle.
As the victim was driving away, 3 or 4 gunshots could be heard. The victim was able to drive to the 1900 block of Sherwood Way before the vehicle became inoperable. The subject who fired the weapon shot the vehicle’s radiator, front wheel well, and front right tire.
The victim then called the police.
The investigators noted that an officer found multiple spent casings at the location where the shooting took place.
The victim advised that the person who shot at them was a man named Ben Nelms, who went by the name Zues Medula. Nelms had his girlfriend in the backseat of the Expedition. Investigators observed 2 Facebook accounts, one for Ben Nelms and the other for Zues Medula and agreed that both accounts belonged to Nelms.
On March 19, 2021, the victim was presented a duly composed photo lineup and positively identified Ben Nelms as the shooter a month before. The victim knew Nelms was the suspect due to a tattoo above the eye and other facial features.
On March 22, 2021, Nelms was mirandized and agreed to speak with investigators at the TGCJ. Nelms admitted to having multiple Facebook accounts and said he was dating the woman who was at the scene the night of the shooting but denied having any involvement with the shooting.
Ben Nelms was booked into the TGCDF on March 16, 2021 and is still currently an inmate being held on $80,000.00 bond.
